I’m a civil engineer currently working in the UK, and this blog is all about sharing my journey — the ups, downs, lessons, and everything in between — of moving from India to the UK and building a career here as an international engineer.

My story started back in India, where I completed my bachelor’s and first master’s in civil engineering. After that, I spent several years working in a public sector undertaking as an Assistant Engineer. It was stable, challenging, and rewarding — but deep down, I wanted something more. I wanted to explore new ways of thinking about sustainability, design, and construction. So, in my 30s, I decided to take a huge leap: I packed up my life and came to the UK to pursue a second master’s in Sustainable Civil and Structural Engineering.

It wasn’t an easy decision — starting over in a new country rarely is — but it turned out to be one of the best choices I’ve ever made. I worked hard, became one of the top performers in my course, and eventually secured a full-time job as a Civil Engineer in the UK. I transitioned directly from a student visa to a skilled worker visa, which was both exciting and nerve-wracking. That whole process taught me so much about resilience, opportunity, and how to make things happen when you’re far from home.

Having studied in both government and private institutions in India, and worked with public organisations in both India and the UK, I’ve seen how different systems work — and how international engineers can adapt and thrive in them.

This blog is my way of giving back. I want to share the lessons I’ve learned — from finding the right master’s program and writing effective job applications to settling into UK work culture and building a long-term career here.
